JoyFullConversationsFAQ's

The Basics

What is JoyFullConversations?

A guided conversation between two people, recorded on a phone. One person asks the questions, the other tells their story. Then we turn it into a beautiful keepsake, in the storyteller's own words. Think of it as the conversation you've been meaning to have, finally on the calendar.

Who is it for?

Anyone who wants to truly know someone, or be truly known. A parent, a grandparent, a spouse, a best friend, or yourself. It also makes a gift that beats another candle.

How does it work?
  1. Set up a conversation and choose who is being celebrated.
  2. A sealed-letter invitation goes to them.
  3. You sit down together for a guided interview.
  4. We craft the keepsake and deliver it to you both.
Who asks the questions, and who answers?

The interviewer (often the person who bought it) asks. The storyteller, the person being celebrated, answers. Each of you has your own account.

Do I have to be a writer?

Nope. You just talk. We take care of the rest.

Is it available in other languages?

English only for now. Spanish is high on our wish list, and we'll shout when it's here.

Getting Ready

How long does the interview take?

Plan on 2 to 3 hours in total. No need to do it all at once, and most people take a break or two (snacks are encouraged).

Do we have to finish in one sitting?

Not at all. Pause anytime and pick up later, even days later. You can also start a brand new sitting whenever you like.

What do we need?

A phone (iPhone or Android) with a good charge, a cozy quiet spot, and the two of you together in the same room or over a video conference such as Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams. The screen is ONLY to see your loved one, you MUST use your phone to see the questions and do the recording. You cannot use your phone on FaceTime.

Any tips for a great recording?

Turn off the TV and music, put your phone on Do Not Disturb, and keep the ringer on so the app can get your attention if needed. And remember: Pause is your friend.

Can we see the questions first?

Yes! All 111 are available to preview before you begin, so there are no surprises. We do suggest that you do not share them with your loved one though so the answers are more organic and unscripted.

Do we have to answer every question?

Not even close. The questions are a guide, not a test. Skip any you like, and follow the tangents. Some of the best stories come from the detours.

What if my loved one has trouble remembering something?

No pressure. They can simply pass on a question, or come back to it later if the memory wanders back. A forgotten name at 2pm often shows up at 4pm with a good story attached.

What if we get interrupted, or the phone rings?

The recording pauses when a call comes in, so nobody is recorded without their say-so. When you're done, tap to pick up right where you left off.

Can the storyteller say "don't put that in the book"?

Absolutely. Whatever they ask us to leave out stays out, in every sitting.

Privacy and Your Recording

Who has access to the report?

Only the storyteller and the interviewer. No one else can open it unless one of you shares it.

Does anyone on your team read our story?

We only look to confirm accuracy. Our team checks that your recording is clear and that each answer matches its question, so your story ends up in the right place. That's it.

What does AI do?

AI helps with the heavy lifting: it turns the audio into text, figures out who said what, matches answers to questions, and tidies the words into first person. It never invents anything. If it wasn't said, it isn't in your story. You review everything before you accept it.

Who can hear the recording?

Only the two of you. It is processed automatically to make your story. We never sell it.

How long do you keep the recording?

Only until your story is finished. Once the storyteller accepts the keepsake, we permanently delete every recording from our servers. As a safety net, recordings are also removed automatically after 180 days if a story is never accepted.

Can we keep a copy of the recording?

Yes, and we hope you will. Before you accept, both of you can download the full audio. After acceptance, your copy is the only one in the world.

Is deleting the recording permanent?

Yes, and that's the point. It's part of our privacy promise. We'll ask you to confirm before accepting, since it can't be undone.

Is my information safe?

Your story and recordings live on private, encrypted servers, and only the people involved can see them.

Does everyone have to agree to be recorded?

Yes. Both people give their okay before any recording starts.

Your Keepsake

What will I receive?

A beautifully designed story in the storyteller's own voice, delivered as a PDF.

How long until we get it?

We aim for about a week after you review and accept the record.

Is it in my words or yours?

Yours. Always first person, always in the storyteller's voice.

Can I edit my report?

Yes! Both the storyteller and the interviewer can polish any answer before accepting. Your edits stay exactly as you wrote them.

What if I don't like it?

Tell us what you'd like changed. We offer you one editing pass after you receive the pdf keepsake within 30 days.

Can other family members get a copy?

You can share your pdf with anyone after you download it.

Pricing and Gifting

How much does it cost?

$111

Can I give it as a gift?

Yes, and it's a good one. Your loved one receives a sealed-letter invitation with a personal note from you.

What if the person I invite can't or doesn't want to do it?

They can decline kindly, no hard feelings, and you can choose someone else.

Troubleshooting

What if the recording stops?

The app will let you know loudly: a chime, a buzz, and a big orange screen. Tap to resume. Nothing already recorded is lost.

What if I lose my internet connection?

Audio is saved in small pieces and uploaded as you go, so a brief hiccup won't cost you the conversation.

Which phones work?

iPhone and Android.
